Lyric Analysis and Lyric Pitch

The lyrics of a song express a story, feeling or situation and set up what the artist wants the viewer/listener to feel. Each word is chosen specifically and create a certain mood. Lyrics will set up an expectation that a music video can either conform to or go against. The interpretation of lyrics will also depend upon the listener, regardless of the artists intent.

In order to show how different people interpret lyrics, we took a song we did not know the music video to and annotated where and what we thought might happen within the video for these lyrics. My ideas were based around a tragic love story during world war one, as you can see above in my annotation the words the artist used triggered certain expectations or painted a certain picture in my head.

The way someone interprets the lyrics does have an effect on what kind of music video you create. Metal, for example, would have lyrics that would not suit a slow and light music video.

When choosing our song we have to consider what the lyrics are saying and what kind of picture will most likely be painted in our audiences heads. Not only do we want to try and create that picture but we also want to sell the band, meaning we have to incorporate both a good narrative and a creative one to ensure more people will remember the band/video and purchase the song.

Above is the actual video where the lyrics were taken from. As you can see, the artists intention for the song created a very different visual to the one that I had thought up. This makes my interpretation no less valid, but instead shows a different way of interpreting the lyrics and showing them to an audience on screen.
